Learn the basic techniques of Fair Isle knitting and steeking by completing an ear warmer (may be worn as a headband also) in this two session workshop. In the first session, we will discuss yarn fibers, choosing colors and designs, how to read a color chart, stranded knitting techniques, knitting with two colors, and fixing mistakes. You will begin knitting the Fair Isle design on your ear warmer/headband. The second session will cover steeks (cutting the knitted fabric). You will use this technique in class on your own ear warmer. As a bonus, we will also review picking up stitches to add a button band and making buttonholes. This is an appropriate class for a first time Fair Isle knitting and steeking student. (Instructor: Lynne)

Materials: You will need fingering weight yarn in an animal fiber (Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift is ideal)

1 skein (approx. 200 yards) in background color (a light neutral color is best)
1 skein (approx. 100 yards) in a dark color
2 skeins (approx. 100 yards each) in medium tone colors
1 skein (approx. 100 yards) in a lighter color

Supplies to bring to class:

US size 2 16” circular needle
US size C crochet hook
2 stitch markers
3 buttons - 3/4” in diameter
darning needle
sharp small scissors for cutting steeks
sewing needle and thread (you may use your yarn) to sew buttons
colored pencils that match your yarn colors pencil

Pre-requisite Skills: Students must be proficient at casting-on using Long-Tail Method and knitting/purling in the round.

Prep Work: It is important to have your prep work completed in order for you to get the most out of this workshop.
